tailieunhanh - Determination of mercury levels in edible tissues of various fish samples from Sir Dam lake

Mercury (Hg) levels in Cyprinus carpio (carp) (n: 20) and Siluris glanis (wels) (n: 13) from Sir Dam Lake, Kahramanmarafl, were measured during 2002 and 2003. The fish samples were obtained from fishermen. Hg levels ranged from to µg/g dry weight in carp samples and from to µg/g dry weight in wels samples. | Turk J Biol 31 (2007) 197-201 © TÜB‹TAK Determination of Mercury Levels in Edible Tissues of Various Fish Samples from S›r Dam Lake Özlem ERDO⁄RUL Department of Food Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Kahramanmarafl Sütçü ‹mam, Kahramanmarafl - TURKEY Received: Abstract: Mercury (Hg) levels in Cyprinus carpio (carp) (n: 20) and Siluris glanis (wels) (n: 13) from S›r Dam Lake, Kahramanmarafl, were measured during 2002 and 2003. The fish samples were obtained from fishermen. Hg levels ranged from to µg/g dry weight in carp samples and from to µg/g dry weight in wels samples. Even though no high levels of Hg were determined in the fish, a possible hazard may occur in the future depending on the agricultural and industrial development in this area. Key Words: Cyprinus carpio, Siluris glanis, mercury S›r Baraj›’ndaki Baz› Bal›k Örneklerinin Yenilebilen K›s›mlar›mda Civa Düzeylerinin Belirlenmesi Özet: Çal›flmada 2002-2003 y›llar›nda Kahramanmarafl S›r Baraj›’nda bal›kç›l›¤› yap›lan Cyprinus carpio (sazan) (n:20) ve Siluris glanis (yay›n) (n:13) örneklerinin kaslar›nda civa (Hg) analizleri yap›lm›flt›r. Analiz sonuçlar› µg/g kuru a¤›rl›k olarak verilmifltir. Buna göre civa düzeyleri, sazan örneklerinde 0,03-0,18, yay›n örneklerinde 0,16-0,38 µg/g kuru a¤›rl›k fleklindedir. Çal›flmada incelenen bal›k örneklerindeki civa düzeyleri düflük olmas›na ra¤men bölgede gelecekte endüstri ve tar›m›n geliflmesine ba¤l› bir kirlilik olabilece¤i düflünülmektedir. Anahtar Sözcükler: Cyprinus carpio, Siluris glanis, Civa Introduction Mercury (Hg) is one of the most important pollutants both because of its effect on marine organisms and because it is potentially hazardous for humans. The toxicology and environmental behavior of Hg are complex since its toxicity, mobility, and bioaccumulation depend on its chemical form (1). Historically, Hg has been used by many cultures for a variety of symbolic and useful purposes, such as in good luck charms, .
