There is more recent historic evidence of child sexual abuse. Ambroise Tardieu, an important figure in forensic circles in Europe in 1858–69 cited 11 576 people accused of completed or attempted rape in France. More than nine thousand of the victims were children, mostly girls aged between 4 and 12 years. Freud described his patients’ histories of childhood sexual abuse, though later explained them away as fantasy.
