The memory process includes the following stages. • Sensory input and sensory register. We receive information through hearing, seeing, tasting, touching, and smelling. We hold the sensory information in a registry until it can be processed. • Short-term memory. Short-term memory is the ability to recall information immediately after receiving it. If we don’t put this information in notes or learn it immediately, then we lose this information. This is why it is important to be focused during your class period. • Long-term memory. Information already stored in long-term memory along with the new information just processed is used to learn math. • Memory output. The ability to recall the information in long-term memory and express this knowledge is memory output. If there is interference with any of these steps, then learning does not take place. If you do not input or register the input, the process ends there. You need to get the information into short-term memory for a sufficient time to get the information into your notes. Otherwise you will have to relearn the material. Spending enough quality time on your homework will get the information into your long-term memory. What step(s) in the memory process are encountering interference when you are learning math? Unless otherwise noted, all content on this page is © Cengage Learning. Copyright 2014 Cengage Learning.
