Introduction provides a brief review of related literature and identifies the basic adjectives of temperature in Vietnamese and English. Section 2 locates nóng, ấm, mát, lạnh in Vietnamese and hot, warm, cool, cold in English on the temperature spectrum. Section 3 discusses the connotational meanings of nóng, ấm, mát, lạnh in Vietnamese and hot, warm, cool, cold in English. Section 4 compares the ways in which nóng, ấm, mát, lạnh in Vietnamese and hot, warm, cool, cold in English are used to describe the relationships between two humans, two institutions or two states. Section 5 compares the ways in which nóng, ấm, mát, lạnh in Vietnamese and hot, warm, cool, cold in English are used to describe human characters. Section 6 provides a brief résumé of the paper, pointing out what has not yet been explored, and confirming the importance of lexical contrastive study to second/foreign language teaching and translation studies.
