During this year, I had the opportunity to visit many children and parents with whom our staff are working every day on site, and felt touched by their stories. I met eight-year-old Thuong and his single mother Tham. Poverty coupled with difficulty moving made it impossible for her to do farm work. People hired her to peel lotus seeds, but full-day labour only brought home 5,000 dong a day (less than 25 cents). They led a secluded life filled with self-pity as many including her relatives stood aloof from them. Only after joining the nutrition club supported by World Vision Vietnam (WVV) was Tham able to make good friends who offered her encouragement and help in times of difficulty and sickness. Likewise, Thuong had made friends with other children in his children’s club. Having access to small loans and husbandry training, Tham bought a cow. On my visit, she already had not only cows but pigs and chickens, too. Thuong was always proud of his mom who never failed to try her best for him. He couldn’t wait to grow up, have a good job and be a sturdy shoulder for his mother to lean on. When I visited Hoai, her mother and her younger sister, I found out that her father had left the family many years ago.
