Biodiversity is our source of food medicine shelter clothing and livelihood. The region has 3 of the 17 known mega-diverse countries Indonesia Malaysia and the Philippines has several bio-geographical units Malesia Wallacea Sundaland Indo-Burma and the Central Indo-Pacific but it has 4 of the world s 34 biodiversity hotspots Indo-Burma Philippines Sundaland and Wallacea . ASeAn has 34 percent of the world s 284 000 square kilometers of coral reefs. Indonesia Malaysia and the Philippines are part of the Coral Triangle - home to 75 percent of the world s reef-building corals. But 88 percent of the region s coral reefs are at risk due to destructive fishing practices and coral bleaching. Thirty percent 2 517 out of 8 613 of the plant and animal species assessed in the region are threatened. The ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity The ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity ACB is an intergovernmental regional centre of excellence that facilitates cooperation and coordination among the ten ASEAN Member States and with relevant national governments regional and international organizations on the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of such natural treasures. As a regional centre of excellence ACB s goals are 1. To serve as an effective coordinative body to facilitate discussion and resolution of cross-country biodiversity conservation issues 2. To provide a framework and mechanism for sharing information experiences best practices and lessons learned for efficient access of ASEAN Member States 3. To implement a pro-active approach in monitoring and assessing .
