The “Ericsson GSM System” is Ericsson’s implementation of the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), encompassing GSM 900, GSM 1800, and also a GSM 1900 standard for the North American market. These systems are built around Ericsson´s AXE switching system technology. AXE’s system modularity standard allows functions to be added, deleted, or modified without disturbing the functionality in the rest of the system. Thus creating an environment where Ericsson’s GSM system can profit fully from future AXE developments | ERICSSON 1 System Description 1 System Description OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this chapter the student will be able to Describe the network nodes of an Ericsson GSM system Describe the network nodes of an Ericsson GPRS system List the GSM 900 1800 1900 identities and briefly describe the function of each LZT 123 3801 R5A Copyright 2003 by Ericsson AB - 1 - GSM BSC Operations ERICSSON Intentionally Blank - 2 - Copyright 2003 by Ericsson AB LZT 123 3801 R5A ERICSSON 1 System Description Table of Contents NETWORK BASE STATION SYSTEM BSS .6 SWITCHING SYSTEM SS .7 GPRS SYSTEM NETWORK BASE STATION SYSTEM BSS .11 MOBILE SERVICES SWITCHING CENTER MSC .11 SERVING GPRS SUPPORT NODE SGSN .11 GATEWAY GPRS SUPPORT NODE GGSN .12 HOME LOCATION REGISTER HLR .13 GATEWAY MOBILE SERVICES SWITCHING CENTER GMSC .13 NON-GPRS-SPECIFIC SYSTEM GSM LZT 123 3801 R5A Copyright 2003 by Ericsson AB - 3
