Trong những năm gần đây cùng với sự phát triển mạnh mẽ của nền kinh tế trong nước thu nhập của người dân cũng đã được nâng lên. Vì vậy nhu cầu về thịt trên thị trường cũng tăng lên đáng kể, đặc biệt là các loại thịt có hàm lượng dinh dưỡng cao như thịt bò. Điều này thể hiện rõ trong sự biến đổi giá thịt bò trong thời gian 5 năm qua (giá thịt bò loại 1 tăng từ khoảng 45.000đ/kg năm 2003 lên 120.000đ/kg hiện nay). Birth weight and the growth curve of the progenies of such imported cows were also measured. Results show that the imported Brahman cows had an average calving interval of 412 days that of Drought Master cows 449.6 days 37 days longer than Brahman cows. Gestation length of both Brahman and Drought Master cows averaged 286-287 days similar to the values recorded on other imported Brahman and Drought Master herds. Birth weights of the Brahman calves were 22.6 and 20.5 kg for male and female respectively whereas those for Drought Master were 20.8 and 20.6 kg. Weights at 6 months old were 144.3 and 127.4 for Brahman male and female and 134.5 and 128 kg for respective Drought Master calves showing similar weaning weights between the two breeds. However weights at 2 years old were on average 319.5 for Brahman and 356.8 kg for Drought Master calves indicating a higher growth rate of Drought Master than Brahman calves raised under the same feeding .
