Population policies were first referenced in the first Five Year Plan (1956-61) that Nepal adopted. However, it was only from the Third Plan (1965-70) onwards that the policies were more extensively elaborated. Until the Eighth Plan, Nepalese population policies focused primarily on family planning programs. An enhanced integrated development approach was adopted in the Eighth (1992-97) and Ninth Plans (1997-2002). A long-term plan (20-year) was envisaged with major strategies including reduction in population growth through social awareness, expansion of education and family planning programs. The current Tenth Plan (2002-2007) builds on the long-term projected targets of the Ninth Plan | This publication was prepared with support from the BRIDGE Project No. GPO-A-OO-O3-OOO04-OO funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development USAID and implemented by the Population Reference Bureau PRB on behalf of the Interagency Gender Working Group IGWG a network comprising USAID Cooperating Agencies CAs non-governmental organizations NGOs and the USAID Bureau for Global Health. The examples provided in this publication include experiences of organizations beyond USAID. This publication does not provide official USAID guidance but rather presents examples of innovative approaches for integrating gender into reproductive health and HIV programs that may be helpful in responding to the Agency requirements for incorporating gender considerations in program planning. For official USAID guidance on gender considerations readers should refer to USAID s Automated Directive System ADS . Copyright December 2009 Population Reference Bureau. All rights reserved.
